Module 6 - Trellis coded modulation

Overview

Module 6 examines trellis-coded modulation (TCM). We focus on limiting the cost of bandwidth efficiency when using a convolutional code.

Objectives

  • know the strategic difference between TCM and convolutional coding
  • know the strategic difference between Grey coding and set partitioning (Underback)
  • understand the objectives of set portioning and the bit-to-symbol mapping
  • be able to apply Euclidian distance to the calculation of branch and path metrics
  • be able to build a double-rail trellis for the TCM encoder
  • be able to find the minimum distance for TCM
  • be able to find the gain upper bound for TCM
  • be able to decode a TCM code with a double-rail trellis
