Overview
Module 7 examines the simulation of an on-off keying optical communications system with direct detection. We include several noise sources: thermal, shot and amplified spontaneous emission. We examine several filtering strategies.
Objectives
Noise in optical communication systems
- Understand PIN thermal noise in an optical link
- Understand PIN shot noise in an optical link
- Understand ASE (amplified spontaneous emission) noise in an optical link
- Understand how to simulate noise in an optical link with square law detection
Filtering in optical communication systems
- Understand Monte Carlo Technical Simulation
- Understand validation of Monte Carlo BER estimates
- Simulate non-ideal systems
